I have worked in transportation for over 15 years in the 3PL and freight brokerage sectors and have experience in small parcel, LTL, flatbed, drayage, and FTL shipping. I consistently follow any trends and new technology in the transportation industry and focus heavily on process improvement, automation, and business development in my role.

Could you provide an overview of your role and responsibilities within the company?

I am the Director of Transportation for WSI Freight Solutions. I am responsible for leading our transportation department, which consists of a freight brokerage, managed transportation services, and a small truck fleet in WI. My responsibilities also include growing our transportation revenue through marketing and business development projects, researching technology solutions for transportation, and carrier & customer relations.

What are some of the key challenges you face?

Current key challenges I am seeing are consistently growing our business due to the freight downturn, managing change within our team due to the ever-changing nature of logistics, and making sure we keep our communication consistent within our team and the organization. I’ve seen these challenges across many 3PLs and freight brokers, and we all continually work to find ways to mitigate them.

What would you say are some of the futuristic trends that will have an impact in the next 18-24 months?

Two trends I see impacting the freight industry in the near future are AI and the continued development of self-driving trucks. I believe AI will help improve efficiency within our industry, and the tech tools currently available have already shown evidence of this. Self-driving trucks will certainly help with any concerns of driver shortages in the future, but their safety must continually be tested.

What advice would you give to young professionals who are interested in pursuing a similar career, and what qualities do you think are essential for success in this field?

Logistics is an industry that is constantly changing – make sure you have the tools and willingness to adapt and respond to it. It’s also important to consistently research industry trends and emerging technology to stay ahead of the game.
